Ferreting Out Furniture Finds

Buddy and Tina shredded the sofa to bits, and the boys have outgrown the bunk beds.  You need to buy furniture fast and “new to you” fits your budget better than “brand new.”

Start hunting for a sofa or bedroom set at a discount, thrift or consignment furniture store. Savvy shoppers can save a bundle buying less-than-perfect furnishings known as “seconds.”

Seconds aren’t pieces that didn’t pass muster at a factory because they’re missing a button or have a small tear or scratch.  Seconds are just as stylish as their more-expensive counterparts, but are priced to sell quickly.

If brand-new furniture is important, deals can be found on quality furniture are stores that market to the thrifty shopper.

"Weekly ads in newspapers and on television can help consumers find the best deals," says Michael Jedlowski, owner of five Ashley Home Furniture stores in the Valley.

However, know that thrift stores, furniture liquidators and used furniture shops are not created equal. Location and demand can alter prices and merchandise selection.

And if you take the time to consider a purchase you may find that while you were thinking, another buyer snapped the piece up. If this happens, keep on hunting and shopping for the deal you’re looking for.
