What are the trends in the home furnishings industry?
When you think of cutting edge design, Paris, France is mostly likely at the top of the list of cities that come to mind. Paris is known for its’ fashion sense and famous designers. It is also the host to Maison & Objec,t a bi-annual display of the latest in home furnishings and accessories open only to the trade.
Six hours, 2 café crèmes and a glass of Beaujolais later I reviewed my notes and noticed a few very distinct trends. (You have to love a furniture market that has universal signs for bathrooms, food and wine.)
The most prominent reoccurring theme was one of nature. Animal prints still reign as well as LOTS of faux fur in throws and trims. The most intriguing theme was the use of antlers and faux animals heads—the most unusual the heads as wall lamps(see photo above). Other items looked somewhat familiar to products I have seen at log home shows—antler tables, lamps and chairs—just with more style. Sea Shells and specifically coral --another item from nature-- was repeated in trims, finials and art.
As far as the hard woods the finishes were natural, or stained black or a dark gray. Rugs were made of cottons and wools with long shag or loopy threads. Steel was used as insets on tables and as “upholstery” in the traditional French chair. A leaf—particularly a fern leaf was a common motif for fabrics and art.
Upholstered furniture such as sofas and chairs, had a consistent look in almost every showroom. That look is one of casual elegance and is a very clean lined large-scale piece in a neutral natural fabric Similar to American furniture designer John Charles. The colors were taupes, tans, beiges, chocolate, and grays to a deep brown plum. Almost all of the upholstery sits low to the floor. Large and Low is THE theme in cocktail tables—many of them 12 inches tall.
Accessories
Lots and lots of clear glass-- vases, candlesticks, and bowls -- with minimal adornment clustered into groups. Some held shells, white candles or a few flowers—most where empty.
In general, accessories are where the real color came in, very bright very pure colors—and PINK is here to stay. Red is still as strong as it has been for the past 4 years and orange is hanging in there. Turquoise and pure blues are featured in accessories and the green purple combo is everywhere.
This market is frequented by the big boys—the Neiman Marcus being one and numerous other major department stores which are known for cutting edge style and display. Unlike every other furniture market I have been too—there was NO ugly furniture.
